Location of Hebron, IN

Hebron is located in Union Township, Porter County, at the junction of Indiana State Road 2 and U.S. Route 6. The town is about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Gary and 60 miles (97 km) east-northeast of Chicago.

According to the 2010 census, Hebron has a total area of 1.31 square miles (3.41 km2), all land and a population of 3,724. Its zip code is 46341 and area code is 219.

The town was founded in 1844 and was originally called Corners. This settlement had several crossroads and a school which served as an educational center and community house. In 1844, John Alyea laid out three one-acre lots. One lot was used by a blacksmith, the other two were sold to Mr. Palmer. Hebron's first postmaster was the Rev. Blain, who served for two years.

The town was home to many notable people, including Andrew Carnegie. Between 1883 and 1919, he donated $250,000 to help build libraries around the world. In Hebron, the library was built with a $10,000 public grant. In the following decades, many people poured their money into the new library. Today, it houses the Hebron Public Library. It also features a library, a community center, and an art gallery.

The 1970 Hebron basketball team won the PCC tourney and the South County tourney, and featured several players who broke single-season and career scoring records. Several players, including Cody Artuso and Damon Wallace, set career and single-season steal records and broke career blocked shots records. In addition, the team won the PCC sectional tournament in 1973 and 1974 and won the sectional tournament in 1976.
